    • Ukraine“President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has secured Turkey’s crucial backing [as has (LM) Sweden (TG) - see also here (DW)] for Ukraine’s NATO aspirations, though [US President] Joe Biden said he did not think there was “unanimity” among alliance members that it should join during Russia’s invasion” (as giving Ukraine membership of NATO now would instantly mean war with russia - a war with a major risk of nuclear war (see “Russia’s nuclear option hangs over Ukraine and NATO” (Foreign Policy)) - I consider giving Ukraine membership of NATO now would be suicidal - for much, if not most, of the world’s population) (TG) - and NATO eventually closed ranks but without giving a timeline or commitment for Ukraine (LM) - but is now supplying longer range weapons to Ukraine (F24), but a call has been made for NATO to step in as Ukraine to be defeated would be a catastrophe for the world (which it - or, at least, it’s constituent members - can do, and has done, by providing munitions etc - Ukraine being a member is not essential) (TG) - see also here (DW), this backgrounder/then-and-now comparison on NATO (TC), and this assessment (JC);

    • noting particularly Chapters VI and VII of the UN Charter, the 1928 Pact of Paris used in post-WW2 trials, the "laws" of war and IHL and Article 20 of the ICCPR on WAR / CONFLICT:
      “Israels attack on Jenin created 4,000 new refugees; Palestinians have been endlessly displaced since 1948” (TC via JC);
      on the conflict in Sudan:   the UN has warned that Sudan is on the brink of all-out civil war
      (TG) as Sudan refuses (F24) to attend a regional peace conference (VoA), causing a decline of hope for peace (DW), and Sudans military continue to detain critics (DS) as a call (AA) is made for war crimes - such as this (TG), this (UN) -  to be investigated by the ICC ... which has responded by doing exactly that (UN);   an emergency seed distribution (UN);

      on the unrest in France after a racist killing by police:   as France
      s President Macron continues to miss opportunities and fail to live up to his promise - including an increasingly hardline response (LM), “hundreds gather in Paris to honour black man who died in police custody ... despite being banned (TG);   unlike other European police forces, Frances police do not talk about discrimination (LM) - and see here on their racism (F24) and here on the systemic racism (JC);   more police brutality (TG);   the sale of fireworks for Bastille Day has been banned (F24);   in an excellent exposé of and challenge to the far right - who may seek to capitalise on the unrest (F24), an article titled “following riots in France, the far right pits the banlieues against rural towns” (LM);
    • in Australia:   “Australia’s constitution is not a sacred document. Without change it will ossify (TG);   how to undo the last four decades of destruction and restore a properly functioning public service (TC);   “in five years [since legislation was passed] not one person has been charged with foreign interference over social media despite many Australians complaining of intimidation and surveillance online (this raises concerns about the AFP, and whether they are doing their job or picking and choosing which laws to focus on) (ABC);         in a highly questionable piece of reasoning, a court has admitted systemic racism and centuries of repression and then denied an Indigenous man redress for that - and coincidentally seemingly ignored the existence of Closing the Gap and the principles underlying that (TG);         “Australian universities report finds quality of education eroded by ‘long-term underfunding’ (TG);   “the ABC has dropped its public interest defence in a defamation case ... after a federal court judge ordered the journalists to reveal their confidential sources. ... the ABC’s barrister ... said the corporation was prepared to accept the consequences of dropping its defence and paying damages because the issue of protecting sources was paramount (TG);   the potential for improved counselling in schools by reducing religious proselytising (TG);
      • on the proposed Voice to the Parliament in Australia:   disturbingly, lies can be told during the referendum campaign (a Parliamentary committee recommended changes for future elections and referenda, but excluded the current referendum - thereby allowing racist & white supremacist lies, as they must have known unless they were incompetent - which says nothing good about them) (TND) - see also here (TC);   “Indigenous Australians Minister Linda Burney says the proposed Indigenous voice would be a two-way relationship that's key to solving long-running issues” (NIT);   a rebuttal of the reverse racism rubbish (TC) - and another lie (NIT);   “our communities are run by bureaucrats who control Indigenous lives.            a The Guardian exclusive reports
        “the no camp employs lobbyists that specialise in conservative Christian campaigning” (TG) - and a The Guardian investigation further reports “the no campaign in the Indigenous voice referendum is running three different social media strategies, each targeting different groups of Australians with apparently contradictory messages” (TG);

Note: news sources are never perfectly accurate or good - for instance, some have been transphobic (which is why I may, for instance, cancel email subscriptions), but may be good in other areas (e.g., racism) - and attributes may vary depending on region and over time. I do NOT provide an unqualified endorsement of ANY of the media sources I use. Sources with evidence of being transphobic may be marked with a TP .

Assumptions / basis

In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:

  • this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;
  • I expect readers to take positive action on at least some of these stories - e.g., write to elected representatives, where that is possible.

Possible flaws

Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:

  • there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan  Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
  • I could be wrong in my views or commentary - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.
