Trans Day of Visibility

Today is the Trans Day of Visibility - see here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

In response to an excellent message of support from my home states Minister for Equality (see here), I sent the following message:

Dear Minister,

Thank you for this important message on this day.

Ever since I began my advocacy for trans+ people in the late 90s, a series of Labor governments has consistently provided excellent support for the trans+ communities, and I wish to acknowledge that.

Thank you.

It is sad that the need for support still continues, with the global right wing backlash against inclusion often choosing trans+ people as their targets - just last night I had concerns about a friend, but it turned out to fortunately be just an accidental - and thus garbled - text message.

Thus, support for trans+ people is important, but so too are the measures you are working on regarding issues such as vilification - the stochastic terrorism of accusing trans+ people of being _ abusers is, in my opinion, likely to lead to a serious, possibly even fatal, assault on a trans+ person who has been triggered by the lies on those placards - and the lack of apparent action against those signs.

Hopefully that will change once we have better protection.

Today is supposed to be a day of celebration; unfortunately, after the scare last night, I will be mourning those I have lost to hate - especially the vicious hate of deliberate misgendering.

But I will also be remembering the aid we have and are receiving from this and previous Labor governments of Victoria.

So, again, thank you.

Remember: we need to be more human being rather than human doing, and all misgendering is an act of active transphobia/transmisia that puts trans+ lives at risk & accept that all insistence on the use of “trans” as a descriptor comes with commensurate use of “cis” as a descriptor to prevent “othering”.
