Some human rights and other news links [Note: Content Warning - links to reports on bigotry/hate, violence/abuse/war. Reader discretion is advised!] and thoughts - Saturday 1st April, 2023

Note: CONTENT WARNING - some of this content is about upsetting, disturbing or triggering events & attitudes. Seek competent help - including professional - if you need it. Content shown in green (which may be only part of a news story) is about what is generally considered good news”, but personal history may still make such events triggering. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that linked articles may contains names and/or images of deceased people. Reader caution is recommended. For anyone distressed by anything in this post, or for any other reason considering seeking support, resources are available in Australia here, here, and here. In other nations, you will have to do an Internet search using terms such as mental health support - <your nation>” (which, for instance, may lead to this, this, and this, in the USA, or this, this, and this, in France [biased towards English-language - my apologies]).

Black Lives Matter! Be Anti-Racist, Anti-Sexist, and Actively Inclusive in ALL Areas.
The Climate Crisis is real, urgent and
existential!

The Pandemic is Real, and Vaccinations save lives. Stay safe - wash your hands, wear a face mask in public if prudent to do so, and follow informed medical advice.

Some mostly human rights (including significant, relevant links in other fields - such as geopolitics, democracy, or authoritarianism) links (note: the source of news items [but not reference links] is in brackets after each item - normal rules around abbreviations will apply, and abbreviations are listed at the end of this post; links behind hard paywalls have a [$]; also, comments by me are in purple).

  • this week has seen a move to bring a past despot in the USA to justice - and his devotees, as the problems of hate and bigotry continue to be laid bare, along with the role of a media mogul. The world continues to struggle with issues by failing to deal with (or even acknowledge) psychological aspect - especially regarding the consequences of actions to address those issues.
  • in a great and unprecedented move for justice, and noting that the principle of innocent until proven guilty still applies, the former US president #45 has been indicted (importantly, given that persons history of rabble rousing - culminating in the attempted  coup in the USA on 6thJanuary, 2020, his devotees must be kept calm) - see here (TND), here (TG), here (DW), here (TC), here (TG), here (TG), here (RR), here (F24), this on irony (The Grio), here (his lawyers will defend the case vigorously) (SBS), and here (ABC);   “holding world leaders like [POTUS45] accountable is democratic (Time);   a review of the status of judicial accountability for the attempted 2020 US insurrection shows almost one thousand have been charged, of whom 600 are guilty, 1 acquitted, and 15% - compared to 8% of the general population - are in military or law enforcement (NPR);   life expectancy in the USA has fallen as warned a decade ago by scientists - two years difference in life expectancy probably comes from the fact that firearms are so available in the United States (NPR);         “reducing inequality could see world population fall to 6 billion” (New Scientist);   the UKs “illegal migration bill could topple [the] world refugee system, lawmakers told” (TG);   the problem of bias in AI recruitment programmes (TG) as “more than 1,000 artificial intelligence experts, researchers and backers have joined a call for an immediate pause on the creation of “giant” AIs for at least six months, so the capabilities and dangers of systems such as GPT-4 can be properly studied and mitigated” (TG), and “the problem with artificial intelligence? It’s neither artificial nor intelligent” (TG) - but see also this, on the practical limits (and possibilities) of brain-computer links (Nature);   “the former US president Barack Obama has suggested that Rupert Murdoch’s media empire has led to greater polarisation in western societies through news coverage designed to “make people angry and resentful”” (TG) - a respected Indigenous Elder was removed (TND) from providing the Welcome to Country the event Obama was speaking at for allegedly (TG) being difficult because she asked (weeks ago) for a support person and to be allowed to provide a gift!;         after more violence from her supporters (including a motorcycle running down a politician), a notorious transhater linked to white supremacist fascists has left New Zealand without speaking (TG) - see this criticism of the hater (Star), also this on the links between forms of bigotries (TBS) and “the intersection of [right wing extremism/fascism] and transphobia” - which, as that article notes, we have warned of previously - including in my email in January requesting cancellation of the transhater’s visa (M), this summary / commentary / overview (M), this editorial criticism (LA Times) of transhate/transgenocide (M) laws, and this call for better legal protection in Australia (TG) and this message of support for trans people from a Christian Minister;         a vile LGBTIQA+ hate message of social media has drawn widespread condemnation - see here (which is truly surprising - and possibly questionable, given that person’s past displays of hate) (TG), here (TND), here (SBS), and here (ABC) - and the victim has asked for improved protection of LGBTIQA+ people (TG);

I do NOT provide an unqualified endorsement of ANY of the media sources I use. Sources with evidence of being transphobic may be marked with a TP .

Assumptions / basis

In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:

  • this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;
  • I expect readers to take positive action on at least some of these stories - e.g., write to elected representatives, where that is possible.

Possible flaws

Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:

  • there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan  Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
  • I could be wrong in my views or commentary - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.

 If you appreciated this post, please consider promoting it - there are some links below.

Finally, remember: we need to be more human being rather than human doing.
