Further to my post here, some First Peoples are now concerned about the effect the referendum is having on their community - in particular, the ability to overcome differences to work together. See https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/sep/04/yes-or-no-when-the-voice-vote-is-over-indigenous-australians-will-have-to-come-together
The effects on the nation of Australia are examined in https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/sep/03/in-the-new-order-where-facts-are-contested-can-an-indigenous-voice-to-parliament-be-delivered
My opinion is that the conservative political parties and media and their leaders (especially Dutton)/owners (especially Murdoch) are directly responsible for this, and ALL of the suffering that is and will flow from it.
I also consider the unfathomable decision by the ALP to allow lies to be just as, if not more, responsible.
The referendum may still win, but if it doesn’t, the fallout will be widespread - including for the conservatives.
PS - there has been more in the media on this and related matters, including:
- Liberals accused of ‘dirty tactics’ over Indigenous voice pamphlet leading voters to site that harvests information https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/sep/05/liberals-accused-of-dirty-tactics-over-indigenous-voice-pamphlet-leading-voters-to-site-that-harvests-information
- Megan Davis condemns use of 'Trumpian' misinformation tactics in referendum debate https://nit.com.au/04-09-2023/7502/megan-davis-attacks-trumpian-misinformation-during-the-referendum-debate
- Michael Long calls on King to back Voice, plans royal delegation https://thenewdaily.com.au/indigenous-voice/2023/09/05/voice-michael-long-king-charles/
Also on the them of the repercussions of white supremacism:
- First Nations-led child protection, independent police oversight amongst Yoorrook recommendations https://nit.com.au/04-09-2023/7505/first-nations-controlled-child-protection-system-independent-police-oversight-amongst-recommendations-in-yoorrook-interim-report
I'll end with a better news story, although this is about undoing past harm:
- Manchester Museum hands back 174 objects to Indigenous Australian islanders https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/sep/05/manchester-museum-hands-back-objects-to-indigenous-australian-anindilyakwa
Assumptions / basis
In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:
- this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;
Possible flaws
Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:
- there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan
Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
- I could be wrong - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.
If they are of any use of interest, the activism information links from my former news posts are available in this post.

Finally, remember: we need to be more human being rather than human doing.
