Further to my post at https://politicalmusingsofkayleen.blogspot.com/2022/09/on-hostile-and-unsafe-workplaces.html, and https://politicalmusingsofkayleen.blogspot.com/2022/09/preview-from-coming-news-post.html, I’d like to write a little more on this topic.
In this post, I’d like to call for more statistical examination on work-related suicides - in particular, can we please have an examination of the link between suicides and work stress - not just hours worked, but the INTENSITY with which the work is undertaken?
The latter is a problem because, no matter that it is a real and major factor, it is not easily measured (do we need to measure cortisol in workers’ blood?) and may not fit into the comfortable fixations of managers. On that, I'll repeat some links here from this week’s coming news post:
- “3 ways ‘bossware’ surveillance technology is turning back the management clock” (TC) - the identification of specific problems is important, and the history of so-called “scientific management” is good background, and I can see all these outcomes (decreased health & productivity and failure to measure proper outcome) in the obsession with utilisation rates;
- a whistleblower has pointed out the callous indifference to the risk of suicide amongst victims of bureaucracy - and, from my personal experience, I second that, especially re this (TG).
