On resistance ...

I've had a thought: maybe one of the reasons people follow up learning not to express one form of bigotry by actively resisting change to another form of expression of bigotry is that they are trying to re-exert some sense of control over their life or their sense of self identity. 

In other words, they are creating their sense of self around who they exclude.
