From the news on: Israel-Palestine [Content Warning - links to reports on bigotry/hate, violence/abuse/war, genocide, language. Reader discretion is advised - extreme cruelty]

Note: CONTENT WARNING - some of this content is about upsetting, disturbing or triggering events & attitudes. Seek competent help - including professional - if you need it. Content shown in green (which may be only part of a news story) is about what is generally considered good news”, but personal history may still make such events triggering. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that linked articles may contains names and/or images of deceased people. READER CAUTION IS RECOMMENDED! For anyone distressed by anything in this post, or for any other reason considering seeking support, resources are available in Australia here, here, and here. In other nations, you will have to do an Internet search using terms such as mental health support - <your nation>(which, for instance, may lead to this, this, and this, in the USA, or this, this, and this, in France [biased towards English-language - my apologies]), or perhaps try https://www.befrienders.org/.

PS - This is starting to get a Cuban  Missile Crisis sort of intensity ...

The events in Israel and Gaza, and nearby territories, are appalling - and will not have any winners, as I have discussed in my previous posts at:

The last messages of Palestinians on social media are heartbreaking - as were the communications of some of those killed by the initial violent extremist attack (they were not all Israeli - some were, for instance, Buddhist Thai workers).

Here are some news links (note that I do not name violent extremist organisations/individuals - nor give them the satisfaction of using the T word):

  • “Analysis: Israel’s deadlines to Gaza’s Palestinians have failed”   https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/10/16/analysis-israels-deadlines-to-gazas-palestinians-have-failed   “Even when they run away, worried for their lives due to indiscriminate bombing by the Israeli air force, the civilians of Gaza do not appear to fall into the ultimate stage of fear, a collective panic that defies any reasoning.   If Israel wanted to create that uncontrollable fright as a primer to defeat and surrender, it failed. If the rationale of the order was to impede _____ and make it militarily ineffective, it also failed”

  • “Deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust spurs a crisis of confidence in the idea of Israel – and its possible renewal”   https://theconversation.com/deadliest-day-for-jews-since-the-holocaust-spurs-a-crisis-of-confidence-in-the-idea-of-israel-and-its-possible-renewal-215507   “The official Israeli response to those soul-searching questions is that for now the nation must wage war and those questions must and will be thoroughly studied. But, they say, not now. Investigate this later, after the war is won.   Yet those questions are simmering and boiling within the Israeli psyche; it is impossible to resist them. There is clarity and confidence that once the war is over, professional and judicial investigations will be thoroughly conducted, but some have already accepted moral responsibility. ... The sole Israeli national figure who has acknowledged nothing about responsibility is the one on whose watch it all happened, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Indeed, except for a few taped statements, in the week after the war began, Netanyahu had avoided meeting members of the public as well as taking questions from the press.”

  • “‘I hope it can endure’: examples of Jewish-Arab solidarity offer hope in Israel”   https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/15/examples-jewish-arab-solidarity-offer-hope-israel   “But since the new wave of violence engulfing the region began on 7 October – when _____ burst through the Gaza security fence and rampaged through dozens of Israeli communities, killing 1,400, leading Israel to declare a war on the strip that has killed 2,200 – some have found hope in the ability of Jewish and Palestinian citizens of Israel to band together. Thousands of volunteers of different ethnicities are working to help victims of the violence and clean up neglected bomb shelters, amid many other efforts at calming the heightened tensions around the country.”

  • “ASIO boss warns of ‘spontaneous violence’ as Israel-Palestine conflict linked to spate of attacks”   https://thenewdaily.com.au/news/2023/10/17/asio-boss-violence-israel-gaza/   “ASIO director-general of security Mike Burgess on Tuesday urged all Australians – including the nation’s politicians – to play their part in minimising tensions, during a press conference with FBI director Christopher Wray ahead of a major Five Eyes summit in San Francisco”
  • “Jewish groups rally at White House urging Biden to push for Gaza ceasefire”   https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/oct/16/ifnotnow-jewish-voice-for-peace-protest-groups-white-house-biden   “Accusing Benjamin Netanyahu’s government of planning “genocide”, several hundred volunteers from campaign groups IfNotNow and Jewish Voice for Peace chanted slogans, carried placards and sang ancient Jewish songs in protest of what they said was an immoral response to the deadly assault on 7 October by the Palestinian group _____ that killed at least 1,400 Israelis”

From my links for activism post to aid any activism you decide to do:

Assumptions / basis

In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:

  • this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;

Possible flaws

Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:

  • there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan  Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
  • I could be wrong - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.

If they are of any use of interest, the activism information links from my former news posts are available in this post
