anyone distressed by anything in this post, or for any other reason considering
seeking support, resources are available in Australia here, here, and here. In other nations, you will have to do an Internet search using terms such as “mental health support - <your nation>” (which, for instance, may lead to this, this, and this, in the USA, or this, this, and this, in France [biased towards English-language - my apologies]), or perhaps try https://www.befrienders.org/.
From the news on the climate crisis and nuclear threats:
- a The Guardian exclusive reports that “Australia must lobby US for ‘no first use’ of nuclear weapons, says ex-minister Gareth Evans” https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/nov/01/australia-must-lobby-us-for-no-first-use-of-nuclear-weapons-says-ex-minister-gareth-evans “Exclusive:
Former foreign minister says it is ‘sheer dumb luck’ that arms have not
been used in the past 78 years and urges leadership on control
measures”
This is particularly significant, and is something I am likely to write letters about in the near future.
- “Worried economists call for a carbon price, a tax on coal exports, and ‘green tariffs’ to get Australia on the path to net zero” https://theconversation.com/worried-economists-call-for-a-carbon-price-a-tax-on-coal-exports-and-green-tariffs-to-get-australia-on-the-path-to-net-zero-216428

- “Guardian Essential poll: most voters don’t believe Australia will meet Labor’s net zero by 2050 target” https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/oct/31/guardian-essential-poll-results-labor-net-zero-climate-change-renewables “Almost
three-quarters say development of renewables should not ‘come at the
expense of local communities’ and half support nuclear energy” The support for slow-to-provide and extremely expensive nuclear power is a concern

This reveals a staggeringly unprofessional and inept report from CSIRO - one which will, in my opinion, damage that organisation’s credibility for quite some time to come
- “Fire-smart farming: how the crops we plant could help reduce the risk of wildfires on agricultural landscapes” https://theconversation.com/fire-smart-farming-how-the-crops-we-plant-could-help-reduce-the-risk-of-wildfires-on-agricultural-landscapes-215703 “For instance, in Brazil, pineapple crops were much better at stopping fires than peanuts or grazing legumes. In Canada, a pasture mix of yarrow, white clover and Rocky Mountain fescue experienced less intense and slower-moving fires than those that burned through nearby grasslands. A modelling study has even suggested that planting “edible fire buffers” of bananas might be useful to mitigate fires in California. ... These results show there is large variation in the flammability of species found on farms. This suggests that planting fire-retardant crop and pasture species could be a useful tool to strategically redesign agricultural landscapes to help mitigate wildfires in an increasingly fire-prone world.”

Assumptions / basis
In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:
- this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;
Possible flaws
Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:
- there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan
Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
- I could be wrong - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.
