The callousness of some cisgender people - and the irresponsibility of some local Council staff, and the lying, hypocritical cowardice of some corporations

Its late, but I cant sleep.

Ive just read on LinkedIn of a few cisgender people who thought it was funny to be misgendered in airport security.

Its not - it threatens the wellbeing of many trans and gender diverse (TGD) people, and combined with pat downs that go into private” areas (no adults only filter, hence the euphemism), is traumatic for TGD people and survivors of sexual assault, and responsible for a decline in the number of people who use air travel.

Ive posted about that decline before, so I wont repeat the numbers (although I may try  to find and link to them at some future stage), but I know TGD people who havent flown for over a decade because of this - and their careers have suffered as a result.

It is way past time that the incompetents in all forms of security started to accept that they are causing trauma equivalent to sexual assault and other forms of trauma. Theyre not just saving lives: theyre also putting some at risk.

It is also high time for people who probably think theyre trans-allies to stop TRIVIALISING the behaviour that causes deaths - the article concerned ACTIVELY encouraged others to view this matter as something of little significance or even a source of humour - the articles last piece of advice is ... laugh!!!

Such people are far from being trans-allies: they are, in fact, being transPHOBEs allies, and giving them ammunition for every -denying exchange in a workplace along the lines of “stop being so serious - get a sense of humour”.

This is the exact same sort of abuse that is objected to when it happens to women - and it was predominantly women who were involved in trivialising this problem at the airport in the comments on the article (I dont know how the author identifies).

I would also like to know why the death threats against children made to local councils by a few dozen right wing child abusing bigots have not been reported to police.

Are the Councils headed by the sort of moral cowards who head corporations trying to hypocritically cash in off pro-LGBTIQA+ publicity but then becoming craven cowards who cave in to christo-fascist minorities without even challenging the christo-fascists on their wrong views of christianity - or the FACT that many christians are inclusive?

What happens if the Voice referendum doesn’t get up?

There is Indigenous opposition to the Voice for valid reasons - mostly around other options being necessary (i.e., the Voice is not a cure all) and/or better - see here and here, for instance.

Im not going to comment on those arguments, but what does concern me is that if the Voice, which has successfully mobilised support in a way not seen since 1967, doesnt get up, then the other alternatives will stand even less chance of success, owing to:

  • owing to the momentum of hate and suspicion that the Equality Phobic Potato and his lot will have built up;
  • the exhaustion, trauma and shock, and resistance to further attention of even supporters of the Voice; and
  • the reality of the political cycle, which will not allow major issues to be reconsidered immediately - partly because other matters also need to be considered, partly because of the inherent brutality of our systems, and partly because of a desire - whether valid or not - not to encourage ... “nagging” - or bullying, is perhaps a better descriptor.

If the referendum on the Voice is unsuccessful, I fear that would set Indigenous rights back years, if not decades.

From this week’s coming news post: “racial battle fatigue”

This is an important point from this weeks coming news post that I dont want lost:

“what is racial battle fatigue? ... Racial hostility can produce symptoms similar to what soldiers experience as a result of going to war” - At last! Someone has put into words something the victims of persistent discrimination have known for years (Medium);

This is well worth contemplating - for a wide range of discriminated against groups.

Current events in Russia

If I was to sum up events in Russia (for fairly typical news reports, see here (ABC), here (The Guardian), here (NPR), here (Vox)), I would say Russias informal military is attacking Russias formal military, with a view to getting a change of military leadership.

Russias informal military:

  • are widely considered responsible for human rights abuses - see here (ABC), here (OHCHR), here (The Guardian), here (UN), and here (UN);
  • have been sanctioned over their basically willing (at leadership level) involvement in the invasion of Ukraine;
  • have stated that they want a change of military leadership - not that they want to stop the invasion of Ukraine.

Their actions:

  • weaken current russian military activity against Ukraine - which is good;
  • confirm that putin is on shaky group; but
  • they dont indicate that Russia is likely to stop being an oligarchy, nor that the war in Ukraine would end, nor are they confirmation that putin would necessarily lose power.

I consider the social media celebrations and welcoming of these events may be a bit premature.

I certainly hope this leads to a profound easing or even an end to russia military activity/presence in Ukraine, and for a better (freer and more democratic) situation for the Russian people, but Im not going to assume that these events mean any of that will happen.

If putin does go (without any foreign nation's influence/intervention), I consider the nuclear risk would likely be massively reduced.

PS - it is now all over (TG), as a result of a deal (LM) Belarus arranged. Putin has been weakened (TG), but not removed - which possibly makes him more dangerous as a result of being more desperate. Thus, if anything, the world may be a little more dangerous today with regard to the nuclear risk, but the hold that russias informal military held elsewhere (DW) will be weakened (TG), which is good. I think the assessment that this will all help Ukraine is true, but I dont think it will be significant - or not as significant as some seem to think.

PPS - I think these comments by Timothy Snyder are probably the best on these events.

existential!

The Pandemic is Real, and Vaccinations save lives. Stay safe - wash your hands, wear a face mask in public if prudent to do so, and follow informed medical advice.

Some mostly human rights (including significant, relevant links in other fields - such as geopolitics, democracy, or authoritarianism) links (note: the source of news items [but not reference links] is in brackets after each item - normal rules around abbreviations will apply, and abbreviations are listed at the end of this post; links behind hard paywalls have a [$]; also, comments by me are in purple).

  • The existential nuclear threat is receiving some overdue attention this week - this is the greatest risk arising from russia’s invasion of Ukraine - and especially the unwise moves to rush Ukraine into NATO, which would quite possibly mean instant, global, nuclear war.
    Poverty is also getting some long overdue attention.
    In addition, some powerful people may be paying lip service to commitments, as past commitments are fail to be honoured - and right wing fascist haters appear to be getting aid from subversives in government departments, but others are holding the haters to account.

  • on ISSUES OF MAJOR GLOBAL SIGNIFICANCE and/or ACROSS MULTIPLE CATEGORIES

    • Australia has issued (Star) a visa to a fascist extremist connected to the attempt to violently overthrow the US government - which continues the concerns about fascist subversives - or, at the very least, bigots or people with unmanaged unconscious bias - in the relevant government department: see here (TC), here (Overland), here (TG), and here (SMH);
    • Australia’s eSafety commissioner has issued a legal warning to a now notorious social media platform run by a notorious cisgender transphobe about its failure to manage hate (TG) - and Australia has also appointed a national cybersecurity coordinator (TND) as a political party is criticised for using another notorious social media platform (TG);   an article urges don’t mistake your unconscious bias for common sense” - especially in the USA, where modern global white supremacism developed after their civil war (M);   automation failures (TBS) and false positives from AI plagiarism detection impacting more than students’ test results” (TBS);   another scientific advance has raised ethical/morality questions (TC);
    • the psychopathy of forced smiling  - “I think we’ve lost the plot once we turn smiling into a test you can fail. To me, it looks like a red flag. It indicates that our society cares far more about forcing everyone to smile to please oligarchs. Maybe if we stopped making everyone pretend to smile, including ourselves, we could focus on creating the conditions that would make us feel more like smiling” (JW);
    • in an unconscionable act of hate, an “anti-LGBTQ activist arrested for taking mocking selfie in hospital room of critic’s dying father (the hospital staff were also professionally incompetent, and should be censured) (Dead State);   “one of the main suspects in the 2018 assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi has emerged from the shadows (F24);

Note: news sources are never perfectly accurate or good - for instance, some have been transphobic (which is why I may, for instance, cancel email subscriptions), but may be good in other areas (e.g., racism) - and attributes may vary depending on region and over time. I do NOT provide an unqualified endorsement of ANY of the media sources I use. Sources with evidence of being transphobic may be marked with a TP .

Assumptions / basis

In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:

  • this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;
  • I expect readers to take positive action on at least some of these stories - e.g., write to elected representatives, where that is possible.

Possible flaws

Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:

  • there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan  Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
  • I could be wrong in my views or commentary - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.
