anyone distressed by anything in this post, or for any other reason considering

In other nations, you will have to do an Internet search using terms such as “mental health support - <your nation>” (which, for instance, may lead to this, this, and this, in the USA, or this, this, and this, in France [biased towards English-language - my apologies]), or perhaps try https://www.befrienders.org/.
Note: in my “from the news” posts, quotes are shown italicised and blue, my comments are in a different shade of blue, and “good” items are shown in green.
I have loosely grouped the posts where such seemed reasonable, but that
is subjective (i.e., my opinion - others are free to disagree), and
challenging, as some posts belong in multiple “groups”.
Reporting
on recent and currently ongoing tragic events in West Asia, in Israel,
Gaza, and adjoining nations, includes the following:
- “Did Israel’s overreliance on tech cause October 7 intelligence failure?” https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2023/12/9/did-israels-overreliance-on-tech-cause-october-7-intelligence-failure ““Nobody
was listening to them,” Ziv said. Apparently, he added, the Israeli
military suspected _____ would break through the barrier surrounding
Gaza, disable security equipment and storm border towns. The newspaper,
Haaretz, posed the question on November 20 of whether the response would
have been different if men had been the ones warning their superiors.” So ... because higher ups were possibly misogynists,
over 1,000 Israeli and over 17,000 Palestinian lives have been lost,
and hundreds of Israelis and two million Palestinians have been
subjected to a staggering range of severe human rights crimes?! If true, this is appalling
- “Israel’s AI can produce 100 bombing targets a day in Gaza. Is this the future of war?” https://theconversation.com/israels-ai-can-produce-100-bombing-targets-a-day-in-gaza-is-this-the-future-of-war-219302 “AI
should support democratic ideals, not undermine them. Trust in
governments, institutions, and militaries is eroding and needs to be
restored if we plan to apply AI across a range of military practices.
... Until then, machine learning algorithms are best kept separate
from targeting practices. Unfortunately, the world’s armies are heading
in the opposite direction”
- “Fact or fiction: Is Israel really rounding up ‘_____ fighters’?” https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2023/12/10/fact-or-fiction-is-israel-really-rounding-up-_____ The article suggests the use of clearly staged and absurd - but abusive - photos casts doubt on Israel’s claims “Israel should learn from French mistakes in Algeria” https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2023/12/11/israel-should-learn-from-french-mistakes-in-algeria and “‘Like we were lesser humans’: Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture” https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2023/12/12/like-we-were-lesser-humans-gaza-boys-men-recall-israeli-arrests-torture No matter what the military result, Israel has lost the moral war - and its key Western supporters may morally sink with it
- “Israel rejects claims it is trying to force Palestinians out of Gaza” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/11/israel-_____-war-idf-khan-younis-gaza-hostages-threats “... Arab leaders and aid officials warn its intensifying ground offensive could leave civilians with few other options” A major problem here is that Israel has been destroying its credibility for decades now (e.g., one year delay in admitting responsibility for shooting and killing a female US journalist), and a significant number of people/organisations/nations are sceptical of what Israel says (also, see previous news item)
- on peace/ceasefires: “Thousands rally in Tel Aviv: Can they influence the Israeli government? | DW News” https://youtu.be/tIX2kQhAXJc?si=Cr3Aa5QIW5tR9760 a review: “A Way Out for Gaza” https://www.crisisgroup.org/middle-east-north-africa/east-mediterranean-mena/israelpalestine/b90-way-out-gaza “PM joins NZ, Canada in call for Gaza ceasefire” https://www.thenewdaily.com.au/news/world/2023/12/13/australia-nz-canada-gaza-truce “Australia supports the creation of a sustainable ceasefire in the Gaza Strip but _____ must give up its weapons” “Israeli ministers block Mossad head’s effort to restart Gaza hostage talks” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/14/israeli-ministers-block-mossad-heads-effort-to-restart-gaza-hostage-talks “Relatives of the abductees say they are shocked, as reports say David Barnea was stopped from visiting Qatar”
- at the UN: “US vetoes resolution on Gaza which called for ‘immediate humanitarian ceasefire’” https://news.un.org/en/story/2023/12/1144562 which “Netanyahu ‘appreciates’ US veto in UN, says Gaza war ‘will continue’” but also “Analysis: US 'practising doublespeak' by opposing ceasefire and distancing itself from Gaza toll” https://www.france24.com/en/video/20231209-analysis-us-is-practicing-doublespeak-by-opposing-gaza-ceasefire-and-distancing-itself-from-civilian-death-toll Note that “Some US lawmakers 'having discussion' about conditioning military aid to Israel” https://www.france24.com/en/video/20231209-some-us-lawmakers-having-discussion-about-conditioning-military-aid-to-israel which was perhaps influenced by “US ‘concerned’ over reports Israel used white phosphorus munitions in Lebanon” https://www.reuters.com/world/us/white-house-us-concerned-about-reports-israel-used-white-phosphorus-lebanon-2023-12-11/ Notwithstanding the veto, “Analysis: Failed UN resolution on Gaza ceasefire still ups pressure on US and Israel” https://www.france24.com/en/video/20231209-analysis-failed-un-resolution-on-gaza-ceasefire-still-upps-pressure-on-us-and-israel and, significantly, “What’s UN Resolution 377A, can it help in efforts to stop Israel-Gaza war?” https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/12/11/whats-un-resolution-377a-can-it-help-in-efforts-to-stop-israel-gaza-war This is about a measure that I have long considered the UN should use, which is the General Assembly meeting to vote on issues and thus overturning problems such as the use of the veto in the UN Security Council “Australia shifts position to vote in favour of UN resolution calling for Gaza ceasefire” https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/dec/13/australia-shifts-position-to-vote-in-favour-of-un-resolution-calling-for-gaza-ceasefire “Australia joins 152 nations to vote for resolution that expresses grave concern over ‘catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza’” & “US increasingly alone in Israel support as 153 countries vote for ceasefire at UN” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/12/united-nations-general-assembly-vote-ceasefire-israel-gaza-war “Vote highlights a stiffening consensus for a ceasefire in the war, which has killed more than 18,000 Palestinians” & “Biden warns Netanyahu that Israel attacks on Gaza are alienating allies” https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/dec/12/biden-netanyahu-israel-gaza-international-support-declining
- on human rights and human suffering (on both sides) aspects: “Half of Palestinians in Gaza are now Starving; Depriving Civilians of Food is a War Crime” https://www.juancole.com/2023/12/palestinians-depriving-civilians.html “_____ warns hostages doomed unless demands met” https://news.yahoo.com/israeli-forces-push-southern-gaza-023904187.html which is a clear human rights violation “Stories of courage and dedication: Humanitarians on Gaza’s front line” https://news.un.org/en/story/2023/12/1144527 “Why did Biden suddenly accuse Israel of War Crimes in Gaza?” https://www.juancole.com/2023/12/suddenly-accuse-israel.html “Heavy rains in Gaza worsen misery of Palestinians amid Israeli bombardment” https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/12/13/heavy-rains-in-gaza-worsen-misery-of-palestinians-amid-israeli-bombardment “Forced Migration as a Strategy of War: Israel's Mass Displacement of Gaza Palestinians” https://www.juancole.com/2023/12/migration-displacement-palestinians.html “The Plague as Life: 327,000 Stricken with Infectious Diseases in Gaza” https://www.juancole.com/2023/12/stricken-infectious-diseases.html
- on military aspects: “Israel continues to pound Gaza as it warns war could continue for ‘months’” https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/12/11/gaza-war-could-stretch-on-months-as-israel-continues-southern-push And half of the Palestinians in Gaza are already starving. Are we looking at another Biafra, where 1½ million children died, mainly by starvation [CW for link - shows child affected by a starvation illness] (out of a total of 2 million dead, from an initial population of 13.5 million)? “Israel tells US it needs ‘months’ to defeat _____” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/14/israel-tells-us-it-needs-months-to-defeat-_____ This could have serious ramifications for politics in the USA, and thus the world “West Bank fighters say Israel war on Gaza inspires more resistance” https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2023/12/12/west-bank-fighters-say-israel-war-on-gaza-inspires-more-resistance This is as expected
- regionally: “Is Syria’s al-Assad supporting _____ for political gain or optics?” https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/12/10/syrias-al-assad-and-supporting-_____-all-for-political-gain-or-optics The article states that the relationship had ended at the start of the Syrian civil war and only recently been re-established “Not
"Surrounded by Enemies:" Regional Powers Egypt and Turkey retain Ties
with Israel during Gaza Conflict despite Critical Rhetoric” https://www.juancole.com/2023/12/surrounded-critical-rhetoric.html This is a significant point after more attacks on international shipping, “Yemen’s H_____s warn ships in Red Sea to avoid Israel or face attack” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/13/yemen-houthis-red-sea-ship-israel-attack and “Australia mulls US request to send warship to Red Sea” https://www.thenewdaily.com.au/news/national/2023/12/14/us-australia-warship-red-sea & “Australia considers US request to send warship to Red Sea as H_____s target shipping lanes” https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2023/dec/14/australia-usa-request-warship-red-sea-yemen-h_____-target-shipping-lanes The impact of blocked shipping will be higher living costs - and increased environmental impacts as ships travel longer
- internationally: “Accidents of Eccentricity: Israel’s Pacific Hold - The Australian Independent Media Network” https://theaimn.com/accidents-of-eccentricity-israels-pacific-hold/ “Israeli
policy in the Pacific has seen United Nations votes cast in its favour,
the foreign policies of certain countries adjusted, and favours
switched” “Moscow and Gaza: Is Russia ready for a major Shift in its Middle East Policy?” https://www.juancole.com/2023/12/moscow-russia-middle.html CW: mention of genocide. Also, a number of the 17,000 Palestinians killed so far are going to be violent extremists (I
have heard claims of up to 7,000 on one radio programme, but I consider
that likely to be too high - but it may be in the thousands)
Note: as with other mass murderers/serial killers/and the like, violent extremists crave publicity, so I refuse to give that to them - I will avoid using their names (which is a policy adopted by good law enforcement and media for other mass murderers), and I will not give them the satisfaction of being described with the T word.
Note also that the genocidal intent of the VEs I refuse to name is clear, according to this from experts in that topic.

Assumptions / basis
In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:
- this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;
Possible flaws
Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:
- there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan
Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
- I could be wrong - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.
