anyone distressed by anything in this post, or for any other reason considering
seeking support, resources are available in Australia here, here, and here. In other nations, you will have to do an Internet search using terms such as “mental health support - <your nation>” (which, for instance, may lead to this, this, and this, in the USA, or this, this, and this, in France [biased towards English-language - my apologies]), or perhaps try https://www.befrienders.org/.
Note: in my “from the news” posts, quotes are shown italicised and blue, my comments are in a different shade of blue, and “good” items are shown in green.
I have loosely grouped the posts where such seemed reasonable, but that
is subjective (i.e., my opinion - others are free to disagree), and
challenging, as some posts belong in multiple “groups”.
Reporting on recent and currently ongoing tragic events in West Asia, in Israel, Gaza, and adjoining nations, includes the following:
- I’d like to begin with a thought that I haven’t
seen in the mainstream media as yet: Israel is fortunate that Russia is
so tied down in Ukraine, as Putin would probably relish re-establishing
the sort of Cold War ties that the the former USSR, now Russia, had
with Egypt and others in West Asia - and, knowing his history of extreme
violence in places such as Chechnya, Ukraine, and Syria, would probably
push the levels of confrontation and escalation up. I
doubt, given what
has been seen in Ukraine, that Russia would be a serious threat to
Israel - nor that he would seek a direct confrontation with the USA, but
diplomatic relations would undoubtedly be harmed and I suspect the
defences of Arab nations would be strengthened - and protests in Egypt suggest some citizens of those nations would appreciate that. (This
reminds me of one of the risks of China becoming more confrontational
over Taiwan: if that is done while the USA is heavily focused elsewhere
[such as Ukraine and West Asia], it's purpose may be to add enough
distraction for China to invade and occupy the disputed lands on the Tibet-China border that wars have been fought over in the 1960s and many incidents of violence since.)
- “Putin to make rare trip abroad to discuss Israel-_____ war with UAE and Saudi Arabia” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/05/putin-will-make-rare-trip-abroad-to-discuss-israel-_____-war-with-uae-and-saudi-arabia “...
the Russian president is making only his fifth trip abroad since the
international criminal court issued an arrest warrant for him in March
that accused him of responsibility for the deportation of Ukrainian
children to Russia. ... In July he skipped a summit in Pretoria over
fears that the South African hosts would feel obliged to attempt his
arrest. Neither the UAE nor Saudi Arabia have signed the ICC’s founding
treaty, which means they would not have to arrest him. ... The
crisis represents an opportunity for Russia to re-enter global politics,
offering itself as an unlikely champion of multilateral solutions in
the Middle East. It has positioned itself as a potential mediator having
maintained ties with Israel and H____.” I
consider the role of Russia and Putin in human rights abuses clear - not only
in Ukraine, and on that, see “An inside look at the dangerous, painstaking work of collecting evidence of suspected war crimes in Ukraine” https://theconversation.com/an-inside-look-at-the-dangerous-painstaking-work-of-collecting-evidence-of-suspected-war-crimes-in-ukraine-214725 - but note some Ukrainians also have a case to
answer. Is a cessation to horror in Gaza worth the risk of partially
rehabilitating a monster?

- “Gaza: Why all Civilian lives matter Equally, according to a Military Ethicist” https://www.juancole.com/2023/12/civilian-according-military.html This begins with an examination of international law, and then proposes a test for consideration of the issues of proportionality: “ask what a military force would accept if it were “their” civilians who were at risk of harm from military action” Something I have occasionally thought about - but not written - is that Iraq’s retaking of Mosul including minimising the use of heavy artillery to reduce civilian casualties and an opinion piece arguing that “Charging Jews with genocide is to declare them guilty of precisely what was done to them” https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/dec/03/charging-jews-with-genocide-declare-them-guilty-precisely-what-was-done-to-them-middle-east This opinion piece is, in my opinion, (1) being naïve about the possibility of people who have been oppressed subsequently committing acts of oppression, (2) being possessive over the term genocide, (3) making a bad faith and universalist assumption about motivations, (4) making an unjustified argument that use of words advocating for genocidal acts is an essential prerequisite for the use of the term, (5) wrongly assuming those who consider Israel is committing genocide automatically have the view that H____ is not (which is clearly absurd, but not commented on enough, IMO, by pro-Palestinian advocates), and (5) ignoring the reality that there ARE experts who have made capable and objective assessments about a term that was created for the Armenian genocide in a wide range of situations and “The Abolitionist Logic of “Everyone for Everyone”” https://jewishcurrents.org/the-abolitionist-logic-of-everyone-for-everyone “A call from the families of hostages contains the seed of true safety” and “Building the Case for US Complicity” https://jewishcurrents.org/us-complicity-israeli-war-crimes This is extremely comprehensive, but I consider any legal actions within the USA are likely to fail over the justiciability issue, and the USA is still not a party to the ICC - see https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=United_States_and_the_International_Criminal_Court&oldid=1183864682. A couple of links from within the article that are worth highlighting, IMO, are a Reuters exclusive stating “Exclusive: _____ attack, Israeli response fall under ICC jurisdiction, prosecutor says” https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/_____-attack-would-fall-under-jurisdiction-war-crimes-court-prosecutor-2023-10-12/ & “Biden officials privately pushed Abbas to shelve ICC probe against Israel” https://www.timesofisrael.com/biden-officials-privately-pushed-abbas-to-shelve-icc-probe-against-israel/ and “The Moral Consequences of the War on Gaza” https://www.juancole.com/2023/12/moral-consequences-gaza.html This article also considers history including Britain’s behaviour when Palestine was a League of Nations Mandate and “Widespread destruction in Gaza puts concept of ‘domicide’ in focus” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/07/widespread-destruction-in-gaza-puts-concept-of-domicide-in-focus “Concept is increasingly accepted in academia but is not a distinct crime against humanity under international law” and from the USA, “US Scholars of Mideast dispute House Resolution 894's Equation of anti-Zionism with Antisemitism” https://www.juancole.com/2023/12/scholars-resolution-antisemitism.html

bombardments. As strikes continue, the United States is pressuring the
Israeli military to exercise restraint, particularly in the south, where
nearly 2 million Palestinians are now concentrated. Will it work?” I have read opinions that Israel wants to drive all Palestinians out of Gaza. I haven’t linked to them as there are problems with what Ive read, but Israel’s destructive-of-its-reputation conduct does favour wondering about this possibility - and I have written previously about my concern that Israel may win a Pyrrhic victory in Gaza in this post and “Gaza: Israeli Rhetoric fuels fears of Ethnic Cleansing as Israeli Assault continues to push South” https://www.juancole.com/2023/12/rhetoric-cleansing-continues.html and “At least three killed in south Lebanon as Israel, Hezbollah resume fighting” https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/12/1/at-least-three-killed-in-south-lebanon-as-israel-hezbollah-resume-fighting which raises the ever-present concern about a widening of the war and “US sends ‘bunker buster’ bombs to Israel for war on Gaza, report says” https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/12/2/us-gives-bunker-buster-bombs-to-israel-for-war-on-gaza-report militarily,
the tunnels built and used by H____ are nothing like the rudimentary
tunnels initially used by smugglers at the Gaza-Egypt border: the
claimed 500 km of tunnels are deep (reportedly up to 30 m underground)
and solid - with prefabricated reinforced concrete segments, which is a
state of the art approach - thus the desire for bombs that penetrate
deeper into the earth before exploding, where they create an effect like
an earthquake. I cannot say whether that will be adequate to damage or
destroy the tunnels, as I don't have (nor do I want) the technical info,
but I suspect that would be the case or otherwise those expensive
munitions would not be provided. Of course, the tunnels are also where
the hostages are being held, and this will also damage or destroy the
foundations of anything nearby ... and “Israel’s focus turns to Khan Younis as it hunts for _____ leaders” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/06/israels-focus-turns-to-khan-younis-as-it-hunts-for-_____-leaders & “UN chief warns Gaza aid delivery could collapse as Israel and _____ fight house-to-house” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/dec/06/israel-and-_____-fight-house-to-house-battles-across-gaza & “Hundreds more killed in Gaza as Israel pursues _____” https://www.thenewdaily.com.au/news/world/middle-east-news/2023/12/08/israel-_____-battle

Note: as with other mass murderers/serial killers/and the like, violent extremists crave publicity, so I refuse to give that to them - I will avoid using their names (which is a policy adopted by good law enforcement and media for other mass murderers), and I will not give them the satisfaction of being described with the T word.
Note also that the genocidal intent of the VEs I refuse to name is clear, according to this from experts in that topic.
My links for activism post may aid any activism you may decide to do on any/all of these.
Assumptions / basis
In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:
- this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;
Possible flaws
Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:
- there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan
Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
- I could be wrong - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.
If they are of any use of interest, the activism information links from my former news posts are available in this post.
