I have loosely grouped the posts where such seemed reasonable, but that

challenging, as some posts belong in multiple “groups”.
From thiis week’s news on politics & democracy, and international affairs (note: I may continue to add links for a few days, possibly up to a week, after these are published), and noting the conflicts, listed here, for instance, and other global issues, such as those listed here, that may not have made it into this weeks news:

the war unfolds in 2024 will ... be decisive for Putin’s wager that
conquest comes without consequences ... Aid from Ukraine’s most
crucial supporter, the United States, has been stymied by the extreme
right wing of the Republican Party. This is causing ammunition shortages
that are already being measured in Ukrainian lives and territory. But
a far greater threat lies on the horizon, in the real prospect of a
second Donald Trump presidency. Putin is well aware Trump will give him a

investing significant efforts to back his candidacy.” “‘Not losing’ is not enough: it’s time for Europe to finally get serious about a Ukrainian victory” https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/feb/22/europe-ukrainian-victory-alexei-navalny-vladimir-putin The

Some of Kinshasa’s neighbours are also implicated in the crisis.” In effect, the current violence is a continuation of the series of genocides in Rwanda, the best known of which is the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and the Twa (see https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rwandan_genocide&oldid=1209187474#Revolution_and_Hutu%E2%80%93Tutsi_relations_after_independence, https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rwandan_genocide&oldid=1209187474, but see also https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rwandan_Revolution&oldid=1207857949#Attack_on_Mbonyumutwa_and_Hutu_uprising and https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Rwandan_genocide&oldid=1209187474#Hutu_Power_movement), which were exported - and continued in other nations - after 1994 (see https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Massacres_of_Hutus_during_the_First_Congo_War&oldid=1208828987) ... and tapped in to an already troubled situation (see this book) ...

notable trend is the flow of firearms from the US civilian market into
[South and Central] America, particularly AR-15 and AR-10 pattern
rifles. ... Another trend the database has been used to identify is
the role state-diverted weapons, particularly explosive ordnance, play
among criminal groups ... Identifying trends like these will help
researchers to know more on a micro level about a problem that exists on
a grand scale. Last year, the US-based non-profit Global Action on
Gun Violence called on policymakers to stop an “iron river” of guns
flowing into [South and Central]
America. Just last month, a US court greenlit a civil lawsuit by Mexico
against US gun manufacturers for their role in arming cartels.” This is good, useful research, but the continued colonial misnomer of the region as “Latin” denies the existence and rights of the Indigenous people of that region also “UN envoy calls for curb on illicit weapons in Central African Republic” https://news.un.org/en/story/2024/02/1146827

is one of those situations where, in my opinion, there is truth on both
sides. The whistleblowing on US war crimes in Iraq - and especially the
callous, sadistic viciousness (verging on psychopathy) of US military personnel (see “What is next for Julian Assange?” https://www.thenewdaily.com.au/news/politics/2024/02/22/assange-extradition ) and the US military’s blatant lies (remembering
their history of coverups of crimes committed by personnel - which
started to change about 15 years ago, and they’re now pretty good,
actually, at openness) - was an essential act of whistleblowing.
Subsequent releases were, again, in my opinion, questionable - and this,
incidentally, is portrayed in the film “The Fifth Estate” (see https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Fifth_Estate_(film)&oldid=1198888260), which was criticised by Assange (see previous link).
It is therefore quite possible that the charges have both a political
motivation and also a valid basis - and that is what the UK court has to
assess. One thing that is, however, indisputable, is the barbarity of
US prisons - and the unacceptable risk of the death penalty. If the
court decides he has a case to answer, the trial should NOT be in the
USA

My links for activism post may aid any activism you may decide to do on any/all of these. If you do, don’t get too fixated on specific instances of problems - important though they may well be: take a moment to also consider the broader issues these incidents and groups of incidents may suggest/reveal.
Note: as with other mass murderers/serial killers/and the like, violent extremists and other evil people/groups crave publicity, so I refuse to give that to them - including not using their names (which is a policy adopted by good law enforcement and media for other mass murderers - as I can do as I am a secondary news source: the name(s) are in the primary sources if people wish to know them).
Assumptions / basis
In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:
- this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;
Possible flaws
Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:
- there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan
Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
- I could be wrong - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.
If they are of any use of interest, the activism information links from my former news posts are available in this post.
