anyone distressed by anything in this post, or for any other reason considering

In other nations, you will have to do an Internet search using terms such as “mental health support - <your nation>” (which, for instance, may lead to this, this, and this, in the USA, or this, this, and this, in France [biased towards English-language - my apologies]), or perhaps try https://www.befrienders.org/.
Note: in my “from the news” posts, quotes are shown italicised and blue, my comments are in a different shade of blue, and “good” items are shown in green. I have loosely grouped the posts where such seemed reasonable, but that is subjective (i.e., my opinion - others are free to disagree), and challenging, as some posts belong in multiple “groups”.
The following are the first reports I have come across regarding Iran’s response to Israel’s (unacknowledged) attack on the Iranian Embassy in Syria:
- “Iran missile and drone attack on Israel – what we know so far” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/14/iran-missile-and-drone-attack-on-israel-what-we-know-so-far “Israel’s military has reported minor damage after Iran launched dozens of drones and missiles towards it late on Saturday” “Iran launches hundreds of missiles, drones in first direct attack on Israel” https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/4/13/israeli-army-says-iran-has-launched-drones-at-israel “Israel says, with help from US, UK and other forces, it intercepted vast majority of 300 drones and missiles launched by Iran” The other forces include Jordan, which said it took action to protect its citizens - and such missiles falling short, into deserts, was reportedly expected “Jordan says it intercepted flying objects that entered its airspace” https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/jordan-says-it-intercepted-flying-objects-that-entered-its-airspace-2024-04-14/ “Iran launches first ever direct military assault on Israel” https://www.sbs.com.au/news/podcast-episode/iran-launches-first-ever-direct-military-assault-on-israel/xmc3ax0nh “Iran launches drones towards Israel after earlier threatening retaliation for consulate strike” https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-04-14/iran-launches-drones-towards-israel/103705704
- “Bullish Iran hails attack on Israel as a success and says operation is over” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/14/bullish-iran-hails-attack-israel-success-operation-over “Jubilant mood ignores fact almost all drones were shot down but Tehran suggests objectives were achieved A bullish Iranian government hailed its unprecedented direct strike on Israel as a success and said that as far as it was concerned the military operation was now over” “Iran warns Israel, US of ‘severe response’ in case of retaliation” https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/4/14/iran-warns-israel-us-of-severe-response-in-case-of-retaliation This indication from Iran that it will not pursue further action, presumably having done enough to satisfy its internal and supporter hawks, is being reported as a key plank in its diplomatic strategy to stop any further escalation - and the USA is also reported as seeking containment. However, what Israel does or doesn’t do is up to it - especially the hardliners/hawks in the Israeli Cabinet ...
- “‘True Promise’: Why and how did Iran launch a historic attack on Israel?” https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/4/14/true-promise-why-and-how-did-iran-launch-a-historic-attack-on-israel “Iran has just launched the largest ever drone strike in the world, and the biggest missile attack in its history”
- “Fate of Middle East hangs in the balance as Israel mulls its next steps” https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/14/fate-of-middle-east-hangs-in-the-balance-as-israel-mulls-its-next-steps “Joe Biden is believed to have urged restraint, and Tehran deems the matter ‘concluded’ but ultimately Israel’s response lies in the hands of three prickly rivals in its war cabinet” “Biden vows G7 response, ‘ironclad’ US support for Israel after Iran attacks” https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/4/14/biden-vows-g7-response-ironclad-us-support-for-israel-after-iran-attacks “The US president reiterates support for Israel in call with Netanyahu amid reports that he is also opposed to a counterattack against Iran” “Iran warns Israel against retaliation, global powers urge restraint” https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israels-netanyahu-vows-victory-after-iran-strikes-fears-wider-conflict-grow-2024-04-14/
- “Analysis: As Iranian rockets and drones lit up the sky over Israel, the Middle East entered a dangerous new phase” https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-04-14/iranian-missiles-fly-through-sky-over-israel/103706244
More analysis will come over time - and I have a few other links on the ship Iran seized and other matters.
The major concern now, however, is: what will Israel do?
PS
- “Iran might have launched this attack knowing that it would be thwarted” https://www.france24.com/en/video/20240414-a-lot-of-drones-and-ballistic-missiles-that-were-shot-down-were-actually-done-so-outside-of-israeli-airspace “FRANCE 24's correspondent in Washington Fraser Jackson said, “the US had intelligence that this kind of attack was possible, the scale of which however they are calling ‘unprecedented’”. Fraser added that “there is also a feeling within the government that Iran might have launched this attack knowing that it would be thwarted [. . .] they needed to do something big to show that they would respond to the attack on their embassy in Syria”” I agree with this assessment - but the Bedouin child who was killed must not be forgotten
Assumptions / basis
In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:
- this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;
Possible flaws
Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:
- there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan
Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
- I could be wrong - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.
