Something I have written about a fair bit over the years in various places (no, I’m not going to provide links - see below re cutting back on aspects of posts for the sake of my health & wellbeing) is various aspects of the resistance to decency - including fear of difference and/or change.
I have now come across an interview with the author of a new book which, amongst other matters (such as complexity of the mix of residents in various areas that are often lumped together as one side or the other of politics), is what has been termed “anxiety” about change.
My initial comment about that - and it is, in my opinion, a very obvious point - is that the word is a “nice”, “distanced from emotions”, academic word ... that completely ignores the reality of being psychologically/emotionally abused to the point of suicide, physically assaulted, or even killed.
Make no mistake: right wingers who are “anxious” about change are killing people to try to shut it out of their lives.
I therefore consider that word “anxiety” inappropriate. “Fear” is more likely to convey the depth of feeling and what it could lead to, in my opinion.
Be that as it may, I consider the video worth a watch (the rebuttal of fallacies about Trump supporters with actual information - such as richer people being more likely to support Trump, whereas Democrats have more support amongst those with less than US$50k annual income, and that racism, paranoia about diversity, and Christo-fascism are actually major motivations of Trump supporters [although cultists may be a better term] - is very important), and I have read a sample of the book, which is excellent - I have added it to my wish list.
The details of each are:
- “MAGA Radicalization Centers FULLY EXPOSED by Expert | Burn The Boats” https://youtu.be/7Dgo4luB73s?si=TIwQHUQM4vKwAJK2
- “Exurbia Now: The Battleground of American Democracy”, by David Masciotra (pub. Melville House, 2024, ISBN 9781685890902; Amazon , Penguin [which has links to multiple sellers] , Tantor [who I have not heard of before] )
Assumptions / basis
In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:
- this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;
Possible flaws
Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:
- there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan
Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
- I could be wrong - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.
If they are of any use of interest, the activism information links from my former news posts are available in this post.
