Australians’ are not so good overall ...

The poll result reported in the following news article shows that, in my opinion, on the whole Australians are not so good a group of people ...

“More Australians agree with Dutton’s visa pause for Gazans than oppose it, Guardian Essential poll shows | Essential poll | The Guardian”   https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/article/2024/aug/27/more-australians-agree-with-duttons-visa-pause-for-gazans-than-oppose-it-guardian-essential-poll-shows

This is also what politicians have to work with - but, in my opinion, too many politicians are NOT “working with” this - they are (too often) pandering to the lowest common denominator that will get them as many votes as possible that they can live with ... rather than leading, which involves advocating for decency, which must be done from years BEFORE switching in to pre-election mode ...

On the other hand, Dutton seems to be quite happy to be as divisive as he wants, without are care for consequence ...

See:

“Jim Chalmers calls Peter Dutton ‘most divisive leader’ in modern Australian history”   https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/article/2024/aug/26/jim-chalmers-calls-peter-dutton-most-divisive-leader-in-modern-australian-history   “Treasurer uses John Curtin Oration to accuse opposition leader of deliberately stoking culture wars and division”

PS - this, from my next “For the world” candle, also helps to illustrate the problem:

the need for sound, evidence-based, expert advised, and demonstrably successful policies on crime, rather than knee jerk short term reactions of fear, anger, and hate (such as this - or this pack of uninformed garbage), be BPM noted, understood, committed to, & implemented;

Assumptions / basis

In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:

  • this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;

Possible flaws

Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:

  • there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan  Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
  • I could be wrong - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.

If they are of any use of interest, the activism information links from my former news posts are available in this post.

Note that, as with my main blog [see here], I am cutting back on aspects of my posts.

Remember: we need to be more human being rather than human doing, and all misgendering is an act of active transphobia/transmisia that puts trans+ lives at risk & accept that all insistence on the use of “trans” as a descriptor comes with commensurate use of “cis” as a descriptor to prevent “othering”.
