I am no fan of the olympics.
I question the expense; I object to the forced relocation of homeless people to other locations for them to be homeless in; I question whether the claimed aim of promoting international interaction, communication & increased harmony is achieved or has been lost to commercialisation & competitive nationalism; I question how international political matters are often handled; the behaviour of security at all such events can be of concern; major sporting events are often associated with increased domestic violence in some homes that are watching the events; and the event has a history of bigotry and discrimination (I try to avoid any cisgender sport that is transphobic) ... although the current controversy caused by the cowardly and callow suggests that aspect may be improving.
Sadly, I may well have to add to this over time, but the first batch of media articles that sparked this post are:
“Under pressure: Algerian boxer Imane Khelif triumphs after days of abuse over ‘gender controversy’” https://www.france24.com/en/france/20240804-under-pressure-algerian-boxer-imane-khelif-triumphs-after-days-of-abuse-over-gender-controversy and “Olympics chief slams ‘unacceptable’ hate speech against boxers in gender row” https://www.france24.com/en/sport/20240803-ioc-head-condemns-totally-unacceptable-hate-speech-against-boxers-olympics-gender-row-imane-khelif
“Olympics Star DESTROYS Idiot MAGA Bullies with PERFECT Response” https://youtu.be/PNaRaWuhdXw
In addition, there was discussion on the the first two incidents in
“Olympics discussion and Australian Human Rights Commission powers” (Out of the Pan)
“Olympics and Imane Khelif; issues for Australian Human Rights Commission mentioned during show; National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders’ Childrens Day; Sunflower Film Screening.”
Listen on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/out-of-the-pan/id312435652?i=1000664256457 or online at https://www.3cr.org.au/outofthepan/episode/olympics-discussion-and-australian-human-rights-commission-powers
And all of my concerns are matters that can and should be addressed through activism, but I have higher priorities at the moment ...
Assumptions / basis
In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:
- this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;
Possible flaws
Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:
- there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan
Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
- I could be wrong - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.
If they are of any use of interest, the activism information links from my former news posts are available in this post.
If you appreciated this post, please consider promoting it - there are some links below.
Note that, as with my main blog [see here], I am cutting back on aspects of my posts.
