The local branch of the Freedom Socialist Party (who organised an event recently to commemorate the 55th anniversary of Stonewall that I spoke at) is running a course on the power of strikes. I’m not attending, but I get their email updates, and found the (historical) articles for a upcoming session of that course quite interesting, and thought I would share them:
- “The 1946 Oakland General Strike” https://www.socialistalternative.org/2022/02/10/the-1946-oakland-general-strike/
- “Seattle General Strike, 1919” https://socialism.com/fs-article/seattle-general-strike-1919-nothing-moved-but-the-tide/ “Nothing moved but the tide”
- “Veteran longshoreman recalls the San Francisco [1934] general strike” https://socialism.com/fs-article/veteran-longshoreman-recalls-the-san-francisco-general-strike/ “And to keep men from talking to union organizers, bosses kept the worn-out gangs working endlessly. While many workers were clamouring for jobs, others were forced to work 72-hour shifts.” Which sounds all too familiar ...
- “Capital’s Labor Lieutenants and Socialist Sergeants: The Danger Within” https://www.marxists.org/archive/fraser/1997/capitallaborlieutenants.html I particularly like the initial proverb: “The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it”
I have found that group to be far better organised and far more genuine than most, and, although I haven’t joined as I’m not inclined towards Marxism, I will continue to stay in touch and work with them when the opportunity to do so presents itself.
I may add more articles over time.
Assumptions / basis
In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:
- this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;
Possible flaws
Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:
- there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan
Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
- I could be wrong - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.
If they are of any use of interest, the activism information links from my former news posts are available in this post.
