Times right now are overwhelming for those who genuinely care for inclusive, functional, progressive democracy.
However, you, democracy defender, have a choice to make - and I suggest thinking ahead may guide your choice.
In two, four, ten, or more years, do you want to feel like and be celebrated like those who resisted an enemy’s occupation, or feel the shame of having been a collaborator?
Consider the example of France in 1940, which had just been vanquished by a military power that was superior to anything else in the world.
In those days, there was no reason for hope: there was no military power capable of challenging Germany, which was winning on all fronts - even the USA has limited forces, and was showing little to no sign of being prepared to get involved, and Germany was allied to the USSR ...
However, despite all that, there were people in France who chose to resist.
Now, decades later, it is the resisters who are remembered, admired, and celebrated - not the collaborators, or the do nothings.
So ... when you look at the threats to democracy now, and feel there are no solutions, do you want to take a gamble on something unexpected happening (akin to those who are attacking democracy losing a major ally [as Germany lost the USSR], or gaining a new and dedicated ally [like the USA back in the 1940s], both because of mostly unexpected events) and know that you did what you could to enable it, or be one of the do nothings - or, even, worse, a character/morality-free social status chasing collaborator ...
Assumptions / basis
In writing this, I have assumed / started from the following:
- this blog states quite clearly that it is about political and human rights matters, including lived experience of problems, and thus I will assume readers are reasonable people who have noted the content warning in the post header;
Possible flaws
Where I can, I will try to highlight possible flaws / issues you should consider:
- there may be flawed logical arguments in the above: to find out more about such flaws and thinking generally, I recommend Brendan
Myers’ free online course “Clear and Present Thinking”;
- I could be wrong - so keep your thinking caps on, and make up your own minds for yourself.
