Some thoughts on #45 being charged

Recently, on my main blog, I wrote about the legal cases against former potus45 (who I will refer to as 45) - and related matters. 

Well, that needs to be updated as 45 has now been  charged  with  crimes he allegedly committed in late 2019 and January 2020. 

Note a few key points: 

• he has been charged, not found guilty (hence the use of “allegedly”), and, even for morally deplorable reprobates such as 45, the vitally important principle of innocent until proven guilty still applies - not to protect 45, but to other people who may be wrongly charged (which shows my bias - fortunately, I'm not a potential juror and don’t even live in nor have even been to the USA); 
• no matter that it founded in necessities including solid legal principles, the time take to charge 45 has been inordinate, and that has resulted in continuing political damage to the democratic viability of the USA.
  

As a human being, I feel like celebrating that charges have been laid ... when I take a step back and look, the situation is still dangerous - the USA has extreme power that is exercised well beyond its borders, and that thus makes the risks to democracy there a risk to democracy everywhere. 

On top of that, even if democracy stays alive in the USA (and much of that depends of whether 45 is tried before the elections or not - if not, I suspect bye bye democracy), that deeply flawed “nation” has truly disturbing levels of racism and other forms of bigotry & hate, poverty and socio-economic division, endemic addiction to violence, etc (which we do as well - to disturbing levels, but without some of the more troubling aspects of the USA's “systems”).

So ... what next? 

Well, as a citizen of a nation with close ties to the USA (that has at times been beneficial), I want to ask our Foreign Minister and national government: 

what Australia will do to insulate itself from future depredations on/by the appalling US election “system”?

There are other right wing extremists lined up behind 45: what happens if one of them seizes power at some stage in the future?
